Safety Pad and Enclosure Net Buying Guide

The spring pad and the enclosure net are the two parts that stand between a jumper and the hard components. They are also the two parts that degrade fastest, because they are fabric sitting in direct sun. Replacing them is cheap. Not replacing them is the most common safety failure in backyard trampolines.

Part one: the safety spring pad

The pad is a foam core in a vinyl or PVC shell that covers the springs and the frame rail. Its job is to stop a foot, ankle, or head from contacting steel.

When to replace it

  • The surface is chalky and leaves color on your hand. That is UV breakdown of the vinyl.
  • The foam feels crunchy or has compressed flat in places.
  • Any split, tear, or section where you can see a spring through the cover.
  • The pad no longer stays put and slides toward the middle when someone jumps.

In a hot, sunny climate expect one to two seasons from a basic pad and three or four from a thick UV-rated one. This is the part where buying the better version is most clearly worth the money.

How to size it

Two numbers. Outer diameter equals your frame size, measured outer edge to outer edge. Pad width is measured from the inner edge of the frame rail, across the springs, to where the mat begins, plus a couple of inches so the pad also covers the top of the rail. Standard widths are 9, 10, 12, 13, and 15 inches.

If your springs are 7 inches, a 10 inch pad is usually right; if they are 8.5 inches, look at 12 or 13 inch. Our size finder tool works this out from your measurements, and the measuring guide shows where to measure.

What separates a good pad from a cheap one

  • Foam thickness, typically 0.5 to 1 inch. Thicker is better and heavier.
  • Foam type. Closed cell EPE foam resists water; open cell foam soaks it up and rots.
  • Cover material. Look for UV-treated PVC or vinyl, ideally with a stated UV rating.
  • Attachment. Elastic straps with hooks or buckles that go under the frame and hold the pad down in wind. Pads that rely on friction alone move constantly.

Part two: the enclosure net

Nets come in two families and they are not interchangeable. Identify yours before ordering anything.

Inside nets

The net attaches to the jumping mat, inside the springs, and the poles sit outside the pad. Jumpers cannot reach the springs or the frame at all, because the net is between them and everything hard. This is the safer arrangement, and it is what most modern trampolines use.

Outside nets

The net mounts to poles that stand outside the frame, so the springs and the pad are inside the enclosure. The jumping area feels slightly larger and the pad is easier to see, but a jumper can land on the pad and the frame. Common on older and budget models.

How to size a net

You need four things:

  1. Frame size, outer edge to outer edge.
  2. Pole count. Commonly 4, 6, 8, or 12. Note that some designs use arched poles that count as two positions each.
  3. Attachment style, inside or outside, as above.
  4. Pole diameter, if you are also replacing foam sleeves or caps.

Net height is worth a thought too. Taller nets, in the 6 foot range, are meaningfully better for teenagers who get real height.

When a net is done

  • Any hole large enough for a child's head or arm.
  • Fraying at the pole sleeves, which is where UV and abrasion concentrate.
  • A zipper or overlap closure that no longer stays shut. An entry that pops open under impact is the same as no net.
  • Sagging that lets a jumper reach the frame through the mesh.

The parts people forget to order with it

Pole foam sleeves degrade at the same rate as the net, and a bare steel pole inside an enclosure is a hazard. Pole caps keep water out of the tube and stop the net tearing at the top. Clips, straps, and net hooks are cheap and they are usually what actually failed. Buying the net alone and reusing eight year old hardware is a common false economy.

The upgrade worth making

If you have an outside net on an older frame and the trampoline is otherwise sound, switching to an inside net changes the safety geometry of the whole thing for around $100. Combined with a thick UV-rated pad, it removes most of the contact-injury risk that premium springless designs advertise as their main selling point.

Once the parts are on, run the safety inspection checklist to confirm nothing else is overdue.
