Trampoline Safety Inspection Checklist
Worn trampoline parts do not cause dramatic failures. They cause uneven bounces, exposed steel, and sagging nets, all of which quietly raise the odds of a bad landing. Ten minutes at the start of each season catches nearly all of it.
Work through the list with the trampoline in front of you. Tick everything that is true and passing. Leave anything unticked that fails or that you cannot verify.

Frame and legs
- No rust past the surfaceSurface discoloration is fine. Rust you can push a screwdriver into, especially at leg-to-rail joints, is structural.
- Rails are straightSight down each section. A bent or out of round frame chews through mats.
- Every bolt is present and tightCheck for elongated bolt holes, which mean the joint has been moving.
- All legs sit flat on level groundRock the frame. Any leg lifting means the ground has shifted or a leg is bent.
Springs
- No springs missing or unhookedCount them. Empty positions load the neighbouring springs and the mat unevenly.
- Coils touch at restRemove one spring. Visible gaps between coils on a relaxed spring mean permanent stretch.
- Two springs from different areas measure the sameIf the busy-arc spring is longer than the quiet-arc one, the set is tired.
- No rust or splaying at the hooksHook failure is how springs let go mid-jump.
Jumping mat
- No tears, holes, or pinholesLook closely along the perimeter webbing, where failures start.
- Stitching is intact all the way aroundAny loose or frayed row of perimeter stitching is a mat on borrowed time.
- V-rings are evenly spaced and none are bentAn arc sitting lower than the rest means the stitching there is going.
- Fabric is not faded, fuzzy, or chalkyThat texture is UV damage, and the fibers have lost strength even without a tear.
Safety pad, net, and site
- Pad covers every spring and the frame railNo spring visible from above, anywhere around the circle.
- Pad foam is intact, not crushed or crumblingSqueeze it. Crunchy foam has no protective value left.
- Pad stays put when someone jumpsStraps or hooks under the frame, not friction alone.
- Net has no holes and no fraying at the pole sleevesThat is where UV and abrasion concentrate.
- Entry closure latches and stays shut under impactA zipper that pops open is the same as no net.
- Anchored, level, and 5 ft of clear soft ground on all sidesNothing hard inside that ring, and 24 ft of clear sky above.
When to run this
- Start of every season, before the first jump. Winter does most of the damage a trampoline ever takes.
- After any storm, particularly high wind. See our guide to off season care for what to remove before weather arrives.
- Before buying a used trampoline. Run the list on someone else's trampoline before you hand over money and haul it home.
- Any time the bounce changes. A trampoline that suddenly feels dead or uneven is telling you something.
The three failures that matter most
- A degraded safety pad. It is the only thing between an ankle and a steel spring hook, it is the fastest part to die in sun, and it is the cheapest to replace.
- A stretched spring set. Uneven pull produces unpredictable bounces, which is exactly the condition that causes bad landings.
- A sagging or holed net. A net that lets a jumper reach the frame is worse than no net, because it creates false confidence.
