Trampoline Sizes Explained: 8 ft to 17 ft

Trampoline size is described by the frame, measured outer edge to outer edge. The jumping surface is always smaller than that number, because the springs occupy the perimeter. A 14 foot round trampoline has a mat around 12 feet across, and that difference matters when you are picturing it in a yard.

The sizes, and what each is actually for

Mat sizes and weight limits vary by manufacturer, so treat these as typical rather than exact. Always check the specific model, and note that many "weight limits" are single-jumper ratings, which is another reason the one-at-a-time rule matters.

Clearance, which is the number people get wrong

Frame size is not footprint. You need clear space around the trampoline for a jumper who comes off the side and for the enclosure poles, which lean outward slightly under load.

• Sides: at least 5 feet of clear ground on every side, more if there is a fence or wall. Nothing hard within that ring: no paving, no play structure, no tree trunk, no shed corner.
• Overhead: at least 24 feet of clearance, measured from the ground. Overhanging branches and power lines are the two things people notice too late.
• Ground: level within a couple of inches across the frame. A trampoline on a slope wears unevenly and bounces oddly.
• Surface: grass, mulch, or sand. Not concrete, decking, or paving.

So a 14 foot trampoline realistically wants a clear circle about 24 feet across. Our yard size planner takes your actual yard dimensions and works out the largest trampoline that fits with proper clearance, which is frequently one size smaller than people expect.

Round vs rectangle at the same size

A 9 by 14 rectangle and a 14 foot round have similar footprints and behave completely differently. Round trampolines direct jumpers back toward the center, which is a passive safety feature for young children. Rectangles bounce evenly across the surface and higher, which is what gymnasts want and what adults notice immediately. Buying bigger than you need

Bigger is generally better for bounce quality and safety margin, with three caveats. A larger trampoline costs more to re-mat and re-spring later, it needs proportionally more clearance, and it is harder to move for mowing. A 15 foot round with 108 springs is a genuinely nicer jump than a 12 foot, and it is also a $180 mat instead of a $110 one when the day comes.

Sizing for who will actually use it

• Under 6: a dedicated toddler trampoline at ground level with a handle, not a scaled down backyard model.
• 6 to 10: 10 or 12 foot round is plenty and easier to fit.
• 10 to 16: 14 or 15 foot round, or a rectangle if there is skill work involved.
• Adults regularly: 15 foot round minimum, or a 9 by 14 rectangle. Smaller frames bottom out under adult weight, which is both unpleasant and hard on the mat.

If you already own one

The size is fixed, but the feel is not. A stretched spring set and a UV-tired mat make a 14 foot trampoline feel like a 10 foot one.
